 UFOs over Hertfordshire

[ Updated: 03/07/2008 ]

22 May 2008 - Hemel Hempstead

A report of a bright light:

".. a bright white object travelling East from West over the Hemel Hempstead/Boxmoor area.  It was completely silent, no flashing lights; with a Magnitude approx -2.0 (Sirius Mag as reference).  It was relatively fast moving – covered directly over head to approx 30 deg over horizon (tree line) in approx 45secs. The speed did not seem consistent however and appeared to be slightly “snaking” across its trajectory.  No cloud cover noticeable.

I first thought it was a satellite, but extremely bright."

After communication with the witness, we were able to confirm that this had been a high pass of the ISS.

21 January 2007 - Bishops Stortford

3 witnesses saw something strange over Bishops Stortford; it was a very clear night and the witnesses saw a large  unequal 'triangular shape' sweep across the sky, blotting out stars as it went.

At first they assumed it was night-flying birds (geese or swans), but it was too big, and there was a solidity or opaqueness to the mass, with an odd almost reflective colour; there also appeared to be 3 or 4 lighter coloured 'panels' on the underside.

26 October 2003 - Hitchin, Herts

A report from "JW" (pseudonym):

"At  18.45 I was in my back garden.  There was no cloud cover and no ambient street light. I was looking up at the sky and noticed a formation of 8 dark red circles in a W shape. They were all travelling at the same speed (East) although all seemed to move independently.

One of the circles was moving in very quick erratic circles whilst maintaining formation and direction with the others. There was absolutely no sound whatsoever.  There were no flashing lights as you would see on an aeroplane and the circles were big enough to suggest low flying (or very big).

I am used to seeing aeroplanes from both Luton and Stansted... they look nothing like this!"

After enquiries to ascertain if there may have been any laser displays in the area, JW was able to provide further info:

"The lights were travelling from west to east at a constant speed. There was no cloud cover and a laser would need something to actually land on to create a visible 'spot'. The lights moved off into the distance until my vision was obscured by my house."

30 August 2003 - Baldock, Herts

From "MW":

Here are details of a sighting last night that I cannot explain:

Date: 30/08/03; Time: 10:30 pm BST

Location: Baldock, Hertfordshire, seen from front garden.

Weather: Light cloud, approx. 20% coverage.

I had just been outside watering the garden (I usually forget to do this until quite late!) The sighting consisted of 5 or 6 lights, red-orange in colour and arranged in an arrow formation; I initially thought that it was an aircraft and I was seeing a nose light, a tail light and an outboard and half-span light on each wing, the light were of equal brightness and about that of aircraft navigation lights at around 5000 ft. I first noticed the lights almost directly overhead and they stayed in formation and moved NNW and disappeared behind nearby buildings after about 8 - 10 seconds. I then realised that it couldn't be an aircraft for several reasons; firstly all the lights were red-orange in colour, there were no anti-collision strobes, the separation of the lights were such that the aircraft (assuming a 737 or similar sized plane) would have been at <2000 ft but there was no engine noise whatsoever.

I live fairly close to Luton airport ( about 5 miles to the north of the eastern approach) and am very used to seeing low flying aircraft in the sky; this looked like nothing I've ever seen and was travelling in an unusual direction too.

This is my first sighting of this type of phenomena; can you shed any light on what I might have seen?

We cannot help but notice the similarities in the object seen to the one reported in Llanyravon in January 1996.
