UFOs over Lancashire

[ Updated: 03/07/2008 ]

8 June 2008

A very curious sighting from 'R':

"On Sunday 8th June at ~ 5.40 pm whilst enjoying the fine Lancashire sunshine in our garden, my wife and I observed a strange floating object around 30-35 K feet ( ~  compared  to overhead jet  altitudes); which through binoculars appeared to be 2 sail like structures which merged together and became eventually a saucer like shape ( inverted cup on saucer).  This did not move much ... I kid you not. Also at a much  greater distance were 4 spherical objects and these seemed to be stationary, with no obvious movement.  Perhaps these objects  could have been  stationary satellites, but  they disappeared after 10 mins  or so as did the closer saucer shaped object.  Amazing but we definitely saw something inexplicable so wonder if anyone else saw these strange things in the clear blue sky on Sunday. "

Certainly a curious sighting, for which there is no simple or logical single explanation.  There are the NOSS satellites which can be flown in formations, but these certainly cannot 'hover' in orbit, and its almost certain these would not be visible in bright daylight.

March 2008 - Lancaster

A number of sightings by one family, across a period of a few days in mid-March:

"The first sighting was when I was driving back from Manchester airport with my son, it was about 12.30 in the morning as I was driving through Galgate Road I saw some orange lights moving quickly up ahead of me, they were about 20-30 ft in the air and moving crossways over the road as if a car was crossing a bridge up ahead.

As I drove on the lights moved round to the side of the car to the right and I could see a matt black triangle looking about 2 feet in diameter with 2 orange lights down each side moving swiftly between the houses about 20 ft in the air it then vanished out of sight. The whole incident took about 10 seconds and was totally silent.
I live very high up in Lancaster and have a panoramic view out of my bathroom window, I was watching the sunset on the evening the 16th and I saw 2 things, one looked like a comet but it was moving slowly and did not have a tail it moved behind a cloud and vanished, I called my daughter upstairs who watched it with me.

About 10 minutes later I saw what looked like a slim black rod moving at a 45 degree angle which then vanished behind a cloud.  My daughter witnessed this event as well."

15 March 2007 - Wigan

The witness was in his back garden (waiting for his dog..) at 7.15pm; he looked around the sky at the stars that were visible; however his attention was drawn to and by 4 amber/orange star-like lights flying towards him high in the sky.  Two of these lights then shot off while the remaining 2 continued their path overhead before disappearing in the distance.

The witness has never seen anything like these before, while it would be easy to think these could have been man-made (possibly fire lanterns?) or perhaps NOSS satellites in formation (although 2 could not have dramatically accelerated away).

The witness describes their relatively fast motion as zig-zagging or almost dancing while moving in a general straight line - a common aspect to the well-known 'West Country Flap' sightings or a formation of lights in 1993; indeed a family UFO sighting from 1974 was of a fast moving light that zig-zagged while flying on a set path.

21 January 2007 - Lancashire

"MM" contacted us to comment on various odd sightings over the previous weeks, but particularly one from the 21st:

"At 7.30pm, I was approaching Read from Clitheroe and noticed some flashing lights which looked like an low altitude aeroplane flying directly towards me from the Blackburn area, so thought nothing of it. It was only when it got closer that I noticed the it was quite large and had a strange light pattern, still very much like a plane but there was something out of the ordinary about it, then it turned round and started to head back to Blackburn. Again I passed it off as just a passenger plane making a turn for an airport.

However, within a few minutes it was heading back towards me, this is when alarm bells started to ring because a plane that size would not be flying as low as this was unless it was on its landing approach; I took more time to look at it in detail and noticed that it wasn't like anything I had ever seen before; the light pattern underneath looked like a diamond of 4 lights at the rear and one light right at the very front. Yes I agree this looks like a plane, but how many passenger size planes have the wings set at the rear? The UFO/plane then continued to fly over the Ribble Valley until a small fighter-like plane intercepted it and then followed it wherever it went, the fighter plane stayed behind and above the other plane for quite sometime, following its every move; soon after the large UFO/plane disappeared.

This is not the first time I have seen planes in the sky that did not resemble anything on record but I'm in no way saying these are alien in any way; we are a stones throw from British Aerospace, and the logical reason is that it was something of theirs, but why would they fly top secret planes at 7.30pm over a built up area?"

MM also commented on frequent occasions recently where the the whole sky would be lit up by some sort of flash, these are definitely not lightning or electrical storms; this is very reminiscent of sky-flashes that used to be very common in the 1990s, and at the time many speculated they were connected with an exotic propulsion system of the alleged Aurora.

Certainly I witnessed these sky-flashes very frequently, sometimes several times a night, but never came close to explaining them

3 August 2003 - Liverpool

A sighting of sphere-type UFOs by "Ian":

"My wife and I were sitting in the garden at about 18:15 Sunday 3rd August 2003, when I spotted a small round-ish silver object in the sky. The sky was blue and very little cloud, the object was too high to be a plane or balloon. We followed the object and it was going in a straight line at a slow speed.  After a few minutes the object turned a sharp right as we followed it for a few minutes then it stopped.

As we watched it, to the left of it 2 more of the same objects appeared. They stayed in the same position for about 10-15 minutes, and they then disappeared.

We are convinced they were not planes as we both know what planes look like and many had past over, but these were too high."

And, in a follow up:

"I would just like to say that a lot of planes fly over to Speke, and we seen a few planes at different heights and these objects were in my eyes not planes as they were too high and as it was sunny and little cloud in the sky you could tell the planes.

Also I would like to say the week before July 27, I was lying in the garden and was just gazing up to the sky when just beneath a cloud, when I seen a big silver ball shaped object just still in the sky.  When I got up  to have a better look it shot up into the sky though the cloud. This is why i had to send you the email."

These objects, at least by description, seem very similar to the 'Spheres' being seen and filmed by various people round the UK, notably Chris Martin.

1 August 2003 - Cheadle & Stockport

A curious sighting relayed to us by the witness, “RF”:

“I am just writing to report a sighting by my wife and I today at about 5.15pm. I am reporting in the hope that somebody else also witnessed this sighting. The sky was bright and sunny, with patchy clouds.

My wife had just picked me up from work in Cheadle, Cheshire and we then headed down towards Stockport in the car. After a couple of minutes, my wife spotted something unusual in the sky. I also looked and could see a rod shape in the sky. The rod was initially looking a matte pencil-lead colour and was about 30 to 40 degrees up at quite a distance. After a couple of minutes, it got closer and I assumed it was about the size of a passenger jet.

The motion of the rod was unusual and didn't seem to have any normal pattern. It just hovered to and fro at a steady pace, changing direction at times and sometimes just hovering, but re-orienting on the spot. At one point, the object tilted and turned, which created a bright reflective glint to pass over it as it reflect the sun. This made the object's normally matte looking surface appear more metallic. My wife and I were engrossed and knew this was not any conventional craft. At it's closest (still probably a mile or two away) we could see no makings, protrusions or trails. The object simply looked like a rod in the sky. We tried to follow the object, heading into Stockport, but we lost it as we approached the main roundabout in Stockport (near the big Blue Pyramid building (Co-Operative)).

We did some frantic searching until we spotted the object again. This time the object seemed to have ascended and was further away, heading in the direction of Longdendale\Glossop. The object seemed to be going above cloud level, but remained clear of the clouds that were dotted around for a few minutes. We tried to track the object further, by heading down the M60 (towards Glossop) but the object just got away too far and high. We lost it after about 10 to 15 minutes of trying to track it.

This is by far the most exciting thing I've seen and really got my wife and I fired up. Some other people MUST have seen this object too.”

RF came back to us with an update, which confirms that others did see the object:

"The next time I returned to work, I found out that several people at work also saw the object from the company car park. This was quite encouraging, although I don't think they had as close a view as my wife and I. The general opinion is that it was "a bit strange", but then the attitude seemed to be that they drew a line and wanted to move on and put it behind them. It seems that people don't really want to contemplate anything other than the conventional.

The obvious conclusion for people who DIDN'T witness the object, is that it was "just a cylindrical balloon or something". I can understand a statement like that, but as a witness, know that is not a valid explanation.

This was a solid object and looked big and heavy. The object didn't manoeuvre like something that was drifting about in the wind. The object would hang in one spot at times, in different orientations. Sometimes upright, sometimes horizontal etc... sometimes slowly re-orienting on the spot.  When the object was moving, it moved at a steady pace. It would move east, then west, then south etc Initially, the object seemed to remain at a constant altitude, but towards the end of the sighting, the object seemed to rise at a steady pace, heading towards Longdendale\Glossop. (South Westerly direction from Cheadle?)

At it's closest, the object looked very solid and rigid. The most awe inspiring part of the sighting was as it tilted and the sun's sheen moved across it's length. I imagine the object was just above the back end of Stockport at this point, probably above the M60. Incidentally, I wondered if whatever it was observing (I assume the object was observing something), could have been the blue pyramid (Co-operative Building) next to Stockport roundabout. A bit of a wild guess, I know, but it was just something that fleeted through my mind at the time.

All I know is, that, in my gut, I felt this was something very strange and "other-worldly". Maybe it could be some secret military test craft? I don't know. I would just be VERY surprised if we have the technology to keep something like that in the sky, without any visible means of propulsion or lift. If we do have that kind of technology, why are we sending up Space Shuttles on a glorified MISSILE?

Since the sighting, I have searched the internet for similar sightings. I have come across several that are remarkably similar. Sightings I would probably disregard in the past. I probably still will, even after my own sighting. There's something in us all that can't quite believe someone else’s account. We only believe what we see ourselves. Silly isn't it?”

We certainly don’t disagree with RF’s observations and comment on the ‘psychology’ of the reactions of witnesses.  RF makes the very valid point that for some reason the vast majority of witnesses do put up a ‘denial barrier’ and seek simple if illogical explanations.

RF’s point over not ‘believing’ other people’s sightings is also more than interesting, I’ve seen this time and again even by people who run research groups – a very odd slant on ‘objective research’!

13 February, 2001 - Liverpool

From IK

"On Tuesday at 11:15pm I was driving in the West Derby area of Liverpool when I noticed a very bright orange/red object in the sky. I stopped and got out of my car to take a closer look. The sky was very clear with no clouds in sight.

The object(s) was moving slowly from west to east and as it got closer moving across my field of vision ( I am looking in a northerley direction) it appeared to be a tight cluster of smaller objects moving together.

It did not display the normal red/left green/right white at the rear and  flashing anti collision beacon aircraft configuration.

By this time a couple of passers by had also stopped and together we observed the object(s) for about five minutes as it moved slowly to the east, perplexed as to what it could be. At this point I would estimate it to be about 4/5 miles away  which would place it approximately over the Kirkby/Simmonswood area, perhaps further, and at an altitude of  approximately 6/10,000ft

The object(s) then appeared to stop in mid air and split into two. The lower object hovered beneath for about ten seconds then dropped away out of sight. A second object emerged, hovered beneath for about five seconds then also dropped away out of site. Both lights going out as they dropped away. The first object seemed to hang in the sky for about 1 minute, blinked on/off a few times getting dimmer as it did, then blinked out altogether. All objects displayed the same orange/red colour.

I later attempted to report this sighting at my local police station but they seemed uninterested, dismissive even. So I reported the sighting to Liverpool airport who seemed a bit more responsive and took full details. I await their reply."
