UFOs over Nottinghamshire

[ Updated: 18/05/2008 ]

13 April 2008 - Beeston

From the witness: "KH":

"When myself and my husband were walking home last night, having just been out for a meal in Beeston, my husband pointed out a really strange light in the sky. I have attached a picture which was taken between 10.30pm and 11pm.

We are quite used to seeing aircraft fly over as we live not far away from East Midlands Airport but this particular bright orange light was completely different to anything we had seen before. There was no noise and it seemed to, at first, move really slowly and looked to be heading North before shooting off at quite a speed in the Southerly direction.

This was then very quickly followed by another one which followed an identical path before finally a third light appeared.  Please could you just have a look at this picture and let me know if you have any idea if there are aircraft similar to this flying around the Nottinghamshire area. There were no other bright orange lights which followed these three sightings."

Various aspects of this event and report suggest fire lanterns; however the photo (which we cannot reproduce under copyright) taken with a cameraphone depicts a remarkably bright light/object - fire lanterns are normally surprisingly difficult to image.

13 January 2008 - Stokeham

From witness "NB":

"I was driving from Treswell towards Stokeham in north Notts and noticed an object in the sky. I would describe it as a horizontal, very slim, pencil shaped, chromium coloured and tapered at the edges.  The object faded quickly and I strained to see if an aircraft could be seen. I could not see anything. As it was a very sunny day I assumed it was a reflection from an aircraft fuselage.

Only a few seconds later I turned a corner approximately at right angles to my previous direction of travel.  I continued to look out of the driver side window (now wound down) in the direction of the objects last position. This I did for about 30 seconds or so.

Realising I had better concentrate on driving I looked forward in the direction of travel only to see another very brief glimpse of the object appearing distant about 15 degrees to my right. Once again it had faded quickly. The distance covered in the short time between sightings appeared substantial.

I thought this time about the possibility of it being sun reflecting on lenticular cloud (as an ex glider pilot I have spent a lot of time looking at clouds) but dismissed this because of the rapid fading of the object.

As we live in proximity to both Robin Hood (Nottingham) airport, RAF Waddington and RAF Scampton I would not want to jump to conclusions about the nature of the sighting, but if any other reports of similar sightings are reported I would be interested in comparing notes."

18 April 2007 - Beeston Ryland

Another new report:

"I live in Beeston Ryland near the final approach for East Midlands airport; I smoke outside in my garden so have nothing better to do than watch the skies, which has become a bit of an obsession. I have just been out side and saw what looked like a massive shining star, it was moving in a westerly direction; it appeared to get higher and higher then all of a sudden the lights when out on it then just vanished!

This is the second time I have seen it. Does anyone have an explanation?"

In certain respects this sounds like a sighting of the ISS going over before fading as it is eclipsed by the body of the Earth; however, this UFO/light was travelling in the opposite direction to the ISS's orbit.

13 January 2004 - Nottingham

A very well observed sighting by 'Jack'

"I believe I have just seen a most remarkable flying object. I live near Nottingham, and am under one of the final approach routes into East Midlands Airport. Planes normally fly over at about 1000-1500 feet (I think), travelling W to E before banking sharply S.

Tonight, I was looking out of the back door to the house. It was about 7.45 pm (between 7.35 and 7.55 pm). I saw a bright white light flying E to W, and thought that was strange for East Midlands air traffic, so assumed it was Birmingham or even Manchester traffic. As it came nearer, I could see a flashing red light above the white light, and quickly a second white light came into view behind the first. It seemed to be at about 3000 feet (but obviously very difficult to tell). There were no lights laterally on the wings, as would normally be expected with an aeroplane, and it certainly wasn't a helicopter.

Subsequently, faint orange lights appeared along the sides of the object, I think because of angles of view rather than them suddenly being switched on. It was difficult to tell how big the object was, but I have never seen anything so large flying (keen plane spotter in my youth, and lived within 5 miles of Manchester Airport and Woodford Aerodrome, (which used to be home to one of the best air shows in the UK)).

Does sound like a plane so far, but so far there has been no audible engine noise. As the object become directly overhead, but a small distance to my right, the engines could suddenly be heard. Just like a jet, but more high pitched and less "warbling", in fact very smooth sounding. As the object continued, the noise rapidly dies away, unlike any jet engine I have heard.

Still sounds like a plane. After being overhead, and the back of the object came into view, a row of five horizontal orange lights were clearly visible. Seemed to be lights and not "afterburners".

The object continued on the same path without changing height, and very rapidly became inaudible again. Lost sight as it disappeared behind roof tops. Whole thing took 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.

I have never seen anything like this, is it some new military aircraft being tested? Made even more strange, as before finding your site, I found a site reporting an almost identical sighting over Nottingham in 2002."

November, 2000: Nottingham

From ‘Dax’:

“I don't know whether this is of any use to you, but about a year and a half ago, I sighted what I believe to be a UFO in Nottingham.

I was staying with my nan, and we were all sitting in the garden when we all saw a bright light in the sky. It hovered still for a moment, but ironically when my nan pointed at it, it manoeuvred away in a ‘tick’-type shape and promptly vanished.

I am not aware of any aircraft that can do that if there is one could you mail me back and tell me about it, but if it was a bona-fide UFO could whatever was in it have been watching us and vanished as a result of us sighting it?"

Unfortunately our attempts to continue dialogue with ‘Dax’ failed to get more details on this case.
