13 January 2004 - Nottingham
A very well observed sighting by 'Jack'
"I believe I have just seen a most remarkable flying
object. I live near Nottingham, and am under one of the final approach routes
into East Midlands Airport. Planes normally fly over at about 1000-1500 feet (I
think), travelling W to E before banking sharply S.
Tonight, I was looking out of the back door to the
house. It was about 7.45 pm (between 7.35 and 7.55 pm). I saw a bright white
light flying E to W, and thought that was strange for East Midlands air traffic,
so assumed it was Birmingham or even Manchester traffic. As it came nearer, I
could see a flashing red light above the white light, and quickly a second white
light came into view behind the first. It seemed to be at about 3000 feet (but
obviously very difficult to tell). There were no lights laterally on the wings,
as would normally be expected with an aeroplane, and it certainly wasn't a
helicopter.
Subsequently, faint orange lights appeared along the
sides of the object, I think because of angles of view rather than them suddenly
being switched on. It was difficult to tell how big the object was, but I have
never seen anything so large flying (keen plane spotter in my youth, and lived
within 5 miles of Manchester Airport and Woodford Aerodrome, (which used to be
home to one of the best air shows in the UK)).
Does sound like a plane so far, but so far there has
been no audible engine noise. As the object become directly overhead, but a
small distance to my right, the engines could suddenly be heard. Just like a
jet, but more high pitched and less "warbling", in fact very smooth sounding. As
the object continued, the noise rapidly dies away, unlike any jet engine I have
heard.
Still sounds like a plane. After being overhead, and
the back of the object came into view, a row of five horizontal orange lights
were clearly visible. Seemed to be lights and not "afterburners".
The object continued on the same path without
changing height, and very rapidly became inaudible again. Lost sight as it
disappeared behind roof tops. Whole thing took 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.
I have never seen anything like this, is it some new
military aircraft being tested? Made even more strange, as before finding your
site, I found a site reporting an almost identical sighting over Nottingham in
2002."
