UFOs over Warwickshire

[ Updated: 18/05/2008 ]

1 May 2008 - Nuneaton

From witness "SD":

"It’s 21.43pm, Thursday, May 1st 2008. I was just watching House on TV when l heard a loud rumbling sound that didn’t resemble a helicopter, plan or jet (which we sometimes get flying overhead). Instead it sounded deeper in tone. Anyway, l listened as the sound travelled overhead. It was such an unusual sound that l looked out of the window. I saw two red flashing lights which appeared to be in alignment, one on the left with the other on the right. However, the gap between these to lights was extremely broad, so broad in fact that there was little chance that the two lights belonged to the same craft.

I thought l was seeing some kind of strange reflection so l went outside. There were in fact two lights. The noise was still quite noticeable, more of a hum now. I went inside and grabbed my video camera. I managed to just about get a bit of one light but the church was blocking the other.

I’m not in the habit of reporting things like this. I just thought I’d jot this down, in case it made some sense to someone and in the hope that someone might be able to shed some light on what flew over our village in the direction of  Twycross."

It is interesting that it was an unusual sound that initially alerted SD to something unusual; this suggests something not within the normal range of sounds/frequencies at the location. UFO events with both lights/objects and sounds are unusual in recent times.

2 April 2008 - M6, Near, Rugby

Two witnesses driving towards London:

"I was driving with my colleague on Wednesday 2nd April 2008 on the morning towards London.

We were near junction 1 M6 at 5.30a.m when we seen approaching us two small bright lights, which looked like an oncoming car apart from it was in the sky.

The motorway was not busy but there were approximately ten vehicles around us. It then hovered over us with no sound, there were no under markings, no warning lights just this vehicle type object above us, all the vehicles slowed down, I pulled over on the hard shoulder immediately but the vehicle was gone, my passenger who was looking out of his window all the time could not ascertain what it was."

12 August 2007 - Bilton

"At 9-15pm I saw 3 objects orange in colour which seemed to be pulsating and flickering again fly over the rear of our property but this time in the opposite direction to last time --west to east. Again the 3 objects were approx the size of footballs and flying very low, about the height small aircraft fly and the objects appeared one after the other about 30 seconds apart from each other flying in a complete straight line and with no sound what so ever!"

12 August 2007 - Shoreditch

"At approx 12.30am on Saturday 12th August 2007 myself and about four customers were sitting in the pub's beer garden when one of our number saw a number of slow moving objects, bright orange in colour, moving from south to north in formation.

There were two horizontal line of four with one light centrally above them and they were moving very slowly. As we watched one by one the 'lights' were extinguished until only the lone light at the top was visible, after about ten seconds this light went out as well.

The following day another customer reported seeing something similar from around two miles north. Can anyone enlighten us?"

In common with many sightings/reports in the summer of 2007, we are 99% certain that fire lanterns were responsible for both of these sightings.

14 June 2007 - Stratford upon Avon

On Sunday 15 June we received a report of an event from Stratford upon Avon the previous evening:

"Six of us witnessed the lights over Stratford upon Avon, at around 10:30 - 10:45. First of all 4 bright orange lights came slowly across the sky from south to north. Then they slowed down and arranged into a formation resembling the Plough (star constellation). Then a similar light appeared from the south and met up with the formation and completed the constellation. Following this stationary period (approx 1-2 mins) they formed a single vertical line and then one by one slowly faded.

The whole experience lasted approx 5-8 minutes. The plough like formation was also witness by a further group of 5 people who were just outside of Stratford."

This event was featured considerably in the popular media and UFO websites and forums, the curiosity being that most reports and discussions didn't occur until a week later, with claims of the UFO event sighting to have occurred on the 22nd June.

It might be possible to consider two consecutive weekends of events, but the reports described such a similar, if not identical, event that we may have to conclude that the media were simply a week late in reporting, without checking the data!

Regardless of the date or dates, the description and other video footage clearly show a flight of fire lanterns.

1993 - M42 nr Birmingham

Not strictly a sighting of any sort of object, but a mysterious experience for two men travelling home, as told to us by "Bill"...

"No one believes my story, usual I suppose.

My dad and I had been to a preseason friendly between Reading and West Brom in 1993. Nothing unusual happened until we got to just outside Birmingham at 23:35, I remember the time because I looked at the clock on the dashboard. We saw the orange glow of Birmingham as we came up the M40/ M42 and I said to my dad I could do with a cup of tea.. He said he could too but we would be home soon, at that point we were less than half an hour from West Brom. I looked at the clock again and it was 23:56. More bizarrely, we were almost an hour from home heading towards Bristol on the M5. We know the motorway well and wouldn't miss the junction. We remembered all of the conversation we had had until that point but we are missing the time in between.

My dad is a rational man and a local preacher, not the sort of person to believe in UFO's etc but he is still mystified. We cannot account for the twenty minutes or the dialogue or how we ended up so far from home when we were less than half an hour from it. In fact we didn't even know that we'd lost sight of Birmingham until we came to a sign for a service station. We hadn't noticed the reduction in traffic either."

A corroborative sighting?

In May 2007 we received an email from a potential witness:

"I was searching on the Internet for sightings of UFO's on the M42 near Birmingham and came across your article "1993 - M42 nr Birmingham".

The reason I was searching for such an article was that in the summer of 1993, I (10 years old at the time), my mother, grandmother, aunt and sister were travelling back from Cornwall on the M42 near Henley-in-Arden at around midnight when we all sighted a UFO about 70-80ft above the motorway. The UFO was clearly visible above the motorway a bright white coloured, slightly elongated/cigar shaped vessel. All of us in the car saw it and were unable to fathom what it could be. Some detail was visible on the vessel as it was that low. My mother tried to stop the car to have a closer look but we were too scared and made her carry on (it was close enough already!) The object had initially appeared as orange coloured from some distance away but as we got closer it became more white in colour. Even my grandmother's (who was in her 60's at the time and speaks mainly Punjabi) first remarks were "Look! spaceship!".

No matter how much I tried to rationalise what we all saw as a balloon or helicopter I couldn't escape the fact that it was neither of those things. Everyone else that was in the car feels the same. I remember my mother reporting it to a UFO society at the time but I can't remember which."
