1993 - M42 nr Birmingham
Not strictly a sighting of
any sort of object, but a mysterious experience for two men travelling home, as
told to us by "Bill"...
"No one believes my story,
usual I suppose.
My dad and I had been to a
preseason friendly between Reading and West Brom in 1993. Nothing unusual
happened until we got to just outside Birmingham at 23:35, I remember the time
because I looked at the clock on the dashboard. We saw the orange glow of
Birmingham as we came up the M40/ M42 and I said to my dad I could do with a cup
of tea.. He said he could too but we would be home soon, at that point we were
less than half an hour from West Brom. I looked at the clock again and it was
23:56. More bizarrely, we were almost an hour from home heading towards Bristol
on the M5. We know the motorway well and wouldn't miss the junction. We
remembered all of the conversation we had had until that point but we are
missing the time in between.
My dad is a rational man and
a local preacher, not the sort of person to believe in UFO's etc but he is still
mystified. We cannot account for the twenty minutes or the dialogue or how we
ended up so far from home when we were less than half an hour from it. In fact
we didn't even know that we'd lost sight of Birmingham until we came to a sign
for a service station. We hadn't noticed the reduction in traffic either."

A
corroborative sighting?
In May 2007 we received an email from a potential
witness:
"I was searching on the Internet for
sightings of UFO's on the M42 near Birmingham and came across your
article "1993 - M42 nr Birmingham".
The reason I was searching for such an
article was that in the summer of 1993, I (10 years old at the
time), my mother, grandmother, aunt and sister were travelling back
from Cornwall on the M42 near Henley-in-Arden at around midnight
when we all sighted a UFO about 70-80ft above the motorway. The UFO
was clearly visible above the motorway a bright white coloured,
slightly elongated/cigar shaped vessel. All of us in the car saw it
and were unable to fathom what it could be. Some detail was visible
on the vessel as it was that low. My mother tried to stop the car to
have a closer look but we were too scared and made her carry on (it
was close enough already!) The object had initially appeared as
orange coloured from some distance away but as we got closer it
became more white in colour. Even my grandmother's (who was in her
60's at the time and speaks mainly Punjabi) first remarks were
"Look! spaceship!".
No matter how much I tried to rationalise what we all saw as a
balloon or helicopter I couldn't escape the fact that it was neither
of those things. Everyone else that was in the car feels the same. I
remember my mother reporting it to a UFO society at the time but I
can't remember which."
